The Latest on Monolith’s Wonder Woman Game

The acclaimed creators of F.E.A.R., Condemned, and Shadows of Mordor are hard at work on an open-world Wonder Woman game. At least, that’s the latest from Monolith. We’ve heard little since the Washington-based studio unveiled their upcoming project at 2021’s Game Awards. The brief teaser shows a cinematic of Diana doing her ass-kicking thing, though not much else.

Already, we know that Gal Gadot — who has played Wonder Woman on the big screen since 2016’s Batman v. Superman — is not attached to the project. Publisher WB Games has stated that the “single-player open-world action” experience will “introduce an original story set in the DC Universe”. However, this is evidently no movie tie-in.

Wonder Woman Gameplay

The publisher’s statement declares that players will “become Diana of Themyscira in the fight to unite her Amazon family and the humans from the modern world.” Not a lot to go on, but it sounds promising.

In June 2022, a job listing promoted by the studio’s narrative director, Toby Elias, hinted at “procedural storytelling”. The emphasis appears to be on “procedural content”, including procedural conversations and dialogue. Although it’s not entirely clear what that entails, it’s likely the Wonder Woman game will feature the Monolith’s Nemesis System.

If you haven’t played Shadow of Mordor or its sequel Shadow of War, this system essentially allows enemies to develop and evolve based on your actions or inaction. A tiered hierarchy shows the ranks of your foes change over time as individuals are promoted or demoted. These enemies, who had unique names and personalities, would remember previous encounters with you. They would comment on it, curse you, and effectively become your nemesis. It’s easy to imagine how such a system might fit into a superhero game, with recurring supervillains and petty thugs becoming scarred by their brushes with Wonder Woman.

Release Date?

Although we haven’t heard much about Monolith’s Wonder Woman game, that will hopefully change soon. 2023’s Game Awards may be the place to watch for updates or gameplay about Diana’s upcoming adventure. It’s unclear whether the title will feature other Justice League characters, like Superman or The Flash, but it seems likely they’ll make an appearance.

Wonder Woman has appeared in various video games over the decades, including numerous Justice League games, NetherRealm’s Injustice series, several LEGO titles, and even Fortnite, but the Amazonian heroine has surprisingly never had her own game. It seems odd, especially considering she’s been a staple of DC since the ’40s, though it gives this Wonder Woman game a lot of potential to explore.

We’ve heard no hint of a release date yet. Following its December 2021 reveal, the studio has been hard at work. It’s likely that Wonder Woman will coincide with Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which WB Games is also publishing. Expect to hear more in 2024 and beyond.

So, what do you think? Are you hopeful for Monolith’s Wonder Woman game? Are you concerned about how little we’ve seen or heard of it? Let us know in the comments!
