Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Review

With Respawn Entertainment’s action-adventure Star Wars Jedi: Survivor hitting the stores on April 28, 2023, let’s look at what made its prequel great and why you should be hyped for it. Released in 2019, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a breath of fresh air amongst various half-hearted Star Wars games and movies that is sure to revitalize your love for the franchise.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is far from a perfect game. It consists of usual action-adventure elements, however, when combined together, they create an immersive experience that can be cherished by gamers and especially franchise fans everywhere. So, let’s see what works for this game and what doesn’t and why you should play it in 2023 in this Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order review.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order — Gameplay & Exploration

Regardless of the overused buzzword, the gameplay and combat of Fallen Order are definitely souls-like. If you’re a fan of From Software games, you will come across various gameplay mechanics that feel right at home. Especially the skill tree that opens up your character for build and combat variety increases the replayability value of the game.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order truly captures the feeling of becoming a Jedi Knight in the Star Wars universe. The game follows a very Metroidvania exploration style where you can travel through various planets, overcoming various hurdles on your path to becoming a knight. The antique design of the Jedi temples across different planets, paired with the history of the Order is a complete treat for the franchise fans.

Combat & Enemies

The combat of Jedi: Fallen Order deserves a special mention as it’s clearly the most addictive part of the game. Combining the mechanics of Dark Souls and Sekiro, fights in this game are as unrelenting as action-packed. You use a Lightsaber to fight enemies in Jedi fashion, which you can later upgrade to a dual-wielded, double-bladed Lightsaber. You can attack, block, and deflect/parry enemy attacks, including projectiles within the constraints of a stamina meter.

As much as the combat mechanics, the enemies, and especially bosses in the game deserve a special mention. Although the game has difficulty tweakers unlike Dark Souls, the difficult enemies and challenging boss fights make up for an engaging and thrilling experience. The only real complaint here is that aside from humanoid bosses, most creatures and big enemies feel like punching bags with a lack of a creative moveset.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order — Story

Jedi: Fallen Order takes place 5 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith with the purge of the Jedi Order by Emporer Palpatine. Afterward, you play as Cal Kestis, a Jedi apprentice on the run after surviving Order 66, but now find himself hunted by the Imperial Inquisitors. Cal’s story is one of survival guilt, remorse, and a redemption arc to build the Jedi Order from the ground up.

With an amazing cast of side characters like the former Jedi Knight Cere Junda, the story is dark and grim. Yet it maintains that same hopeful feeling that Star Wars fans know and love.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order — Final Verdict

While it may not be the easiest game to get into, despite this, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order comes as a ray of hope amidst the mediocre AAA releases. It’s a treat for Star Wars fans who had given up any hope in the franchise. With a hyped sequel just on the horizon, we highly recommend giving this game a shot in 2023.
